Shark Race In Gatlinburg

On Saturday, September 25, 2010 sharks will enter the Little Pigeon River and race downstream for the chance to win $10,000 for their sponsors. The sharks aren’t real sharks, they’re rubber sharks that will have been purchased by donors wishing to support a good cause.

The United Way and Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies have teamed up to host a fundraising event for the United Way of Sevier County which supports several different Sevier County services including the Boys and Girls Club of the Smokies, the American Red Cross, and Sevier County’s Volunteer Rescue Squad.

Not only does the race give participants a chance to support great local agencies, there are also some really great prizes included in the race. The 1st shark to cross the finish line wins its owner $10,000. Other prizes include a 35 carat amethyst, six night Smoky Mountains vacation, $350 Walmart gift card, and a VIP attractions package for the area.

Ripley’s will kick off the event at their outdoor plaza with food, live entertainment, and a few fun activities. Once 3pm rolls around the sharks will be dumped into the Little Pigeon River at the bridge by Christ in the Smokies. The finish line is located at the Aquarium bridge.

$10 Shark sponsorship can be purchased before the event at Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies, at the Gatlinburg Welcome Center, at the United Way of Sevier County’s office, or online. Tickets will also be available at the Ripley’s plaza on the day of the event until 2pm. Sponsors must be at least 18 to win, but do not have to be present to win.

The United Way can be contacted with any questions about the event at 865-430-5727.
