Harnessing Our Roots in the Vacation Rental Industry
Long before Cabins for YOU became one of the top vacation rental companies in the Great Smoky Mountains, our foundation for hospitality was being laid — one cabin, one bed, and one guest at a time.
Generations of Hospitality
In 1940, ten-year-old Walt Plimpton pulled a little red wagon through a collection of “overnight homes” at New England Village in Hampton Falls, New Hampshire. He gathered trash and dirty linens while his mother, Miriam, washed and pressed the sheets at home. Walt’s older brother made the beds, and the whole family pitched in. These charming little vacation homes were themed like a small town — complete with buildings shaped like a church, school, and doctor’s office.
But even this wasn’t the very beginning. Walt was already the third generation in the lodging business. His grandmother, Eva Peterson, ran Peterson’s Cabins in Wells, Maine, in the 1920s — offering rustic accommodations without plumbing or electricity for just 75 cents a night. Her family helped keep the business running, proving early on that hospitality wasn’t just a job — it was a way of life.
Walt carried that passion with him through every stage of his life, through changes in the industry, and across generations. He and his wife, Joanne, later owned their own vacation home on the Gulf Coast, enduring hurricanes and rebuilds to keep welcoming guests. Their son, Greg Plimpton, inherited that same commitment.
Humble Beginnings in Gatlinburg
In October 2001, Greg and his wife, Debbie, started Cabins for YOU in Gatlinburg with just 3 homes and a dream. Out of more than 160 Smoky Mountain property management companies in the area at the time, we were the smallest. Today, we’ve grown to manage more than 430 cabin rentals — with the support of 100s of employees and contractors and a fifth-generation legacy.
- 2001 — Launched Cabins for YOU from a basement
- 2007 — Purchased first operations office in Gatlinburg & launched Pigeon Forge website
- 2012 — Set up first corporate office in Georgia
- 2013 — Opened a third office in Pigeon Forge
- 2017 — Celebrated our mascot Barry the Bear’s birthday!
- 2018 — Won best pet-friendly cabins in Pigeon Forge
- 2019 — Expanded corporate headquarters & established laundry facility
- 2020 — Acquired Chalet Village Rentals, launched rewards program & became one of the Top 50 Vacation Rental Property Managers in the World!
- 2021 — Won best condos in Pigeon Forge & brought plush Barry to life — available in every cabin!
- 2022 — Launched Georgia Cabins for YOU + Florida CFY + Alabama CFY & crossed threshold of managing 500 properties
- 2023 — Acquired 2 cabin companies in North Georgia & upgraded Vacations for YOU Rewards
- 2024 — Acquired another property management company in Tennessee
