On July 4, 2010 be sure to get your spot in downtown Gatlinburg for the Stand Here Fireworks Finale. There are thousands of people that make their way to downtown for this event. It was voted as one of the top 20 events by the Southeast Tourism Society. The fireworks will start shortly after 10 pm and last about 20 minutes. No seat is a bad seat, you might even be able to see fireworks from your Gatlinburg cabin (if it has a view of downtown, of course).

A new addition to Gatlinburg shops will open in early July 2010. The Old Smoky Distillery will be the first legal distillery in the state of Tennessee. The mountains of Tennessee already have a reputation for their moonshine and this new store will bring the tradition to you… legally, of course. If you visit the store while in Gatlinburg you’ll get to see the working still, take a tour and even taste some of the flavors (if you’re over age 21). It’s a piece of history for Tennessee and the owners plan to expand further.
The Smoky Mountain Synchronous Fireflies event happens once a year and only in one other place on the planet, Southeast Asia. This year it will occur on June 5 and last through June 13. So unless you plan to hop a plane and fly down to Asia you’re not going to see something this amazing any where else. The fireflies that gather for the Elkmont Fireflies event are a rare species. These little fireflies seem to coordinate their blinking and they all eventually get in sync with the other fireflies around them. It begins a beautiful light show with thousands of fireflies lighting up at once and it can last up to 6 seconds but as soon as they get back into sync it starts again.
