Rock
City in Chattanooga, Tennessee
If you and your
family are ever passing through Chattanooga, Tennessee it is
imperative that you go “See Rock City” with your own eyes and to
miss it would be to miss one of the great American family
treasures. Rock City is home to breathtaking views, magnificent
rock formations, gorgeous trees and gardens with over 400
different species of native wildflowers, shrubs and trees,
suspension bridges and just a touch of kitsch and childlike
wonder thrown in for good measure. Within Rock City are eight
main attractions that direct you to the different sites and
wonders contained at the park. When you first enter Rock City
you pass through the Grand Corridor which is a fitting entrance
to the wonders that lie ahead in Rock City. Carved out by the
forces of nature millions of years ago there are massive rock
formations surrounding you as you follow the stone path that
leads you deeper in Rock City. Rock City has a deer park in
which visitors often catch glimpses of not one, but two species
of deer wandering here in their forest home. This is your chance
to observe rare white Fallow deer in the wild - descendants of
species transported to Rock City from Europe in the 1930s. Rock
City is appealing to people who love heights mixed with a trill
of adventure, for there is The Swing-A-Long Bridge, which is an
engineering marvel suspension bridge that stretches a full 180
feet through the blue sky. One of the most impressive sites at
Rock City is the 1000-ton Balanced Rock that perches atop the
two points of its tiny rock base as if it has been there
forever. Most of the officials at Rock City believe that over
time rain and wind have worn down the bottom of the base of the
rock, but no one is absolutely sure how the rock formation came
to be.
No one can match the enthusiasm
and nostalgia for this classic destination more than Bill
Chapin, current owner of Rock City and nephew of Rock City
founder Garnet Carter. Rock City is constantly being improved
and upgraded under Bill's watchful eye and he seems to have a
hands-on presence in every aspect of the enterprise. It is this
kind of care that has kept Rock City thriving since 1923.
