Things to do in April

April is a wonderful time in The Great Smoky Mountains. There are all sorts of activities to get you out and about in the wonderful spring air. A few of the events you can take part in while visiting the Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge area are listed below:

Gatlinburg Gateway Triathlon: April 2, 2011, Gatlinburg will be hosting their third annual triathlon. This event begins at the Gatlinburg Community Center. Be sure to have your running shoes and swim trunks on bright and early because the triathlon begins at 8:15 AM. This triathlon is open to anyone fifteen or older that deems themselves capable of swimming half a mile, biking twenty kilometers, and running five kilometers one after the other. Awards are divided amongst men and women, and there are age categories as well as a team event. To pre-register for this exciting event, call 865-436-4990.

Smoky Mountain Trout Tournament: April 2-3, 2011, visitors to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee are invited to the 12th Annual Spring Smoky Mountain Trout Tournament. This tournament is open to adults as well as children. Due to the various categories, this tournament proves challenges for locals and visitors alike. Music of the Mountains: April 15, 2011, in Townsend, Tennessee, the hills will be alive with the sound of Ireland! Music of the Mountains features Celtic music by The Good Thymes Ceilidh Band. This event is sponsored by the Great Smoky Mountains Association. It is a wonderful time to enjoy the joyful music that makes one want to dance an Irish jig as well as relax to the melodious sounds inspired by the melodies of the Emerald Isle’s nature. This musical event will take place at the Great Smoky Mountain Heritage Center.

Mountain Man Memorial March: The 3rd annual 26.2 mile Mountain Man Memorial March will be held on April 15th and 16th this year. This march will begin in downtown Gatlinburg bright and early. Be ready to begin marching at 7:00am as a tribute to our men and women in uniform who have and are currently serving our country so valiantly. The march will journey through highway as well as along rural roads and continue over rugged terrain and mountainous slopes. This year’s event will honor 1LT Frank Walkup. He was a graduate of the University of Tennessee-Knoxville. In 2007 he was killed in Iraq while fighting for our country and the less fortunate of other countries. To participate in this event, you need to pre-register. You may choose Military Heavy, Military Light, or Civilian as your category.
