Memorial Day in Gatlinburg

Memorial Day is celebrated to commemorate fallen United States soldiers who have lost their lives during the wars of our nation’s time. While ceremonies and tributes mark the holiday, Memorial Day has also become the date that marks the beginning of the sunny summer season. Cookouts, barbecues and family gatherings are common on Memorial Day weekend, a celebration of family, friends and the beginning of vacation season. For the past 21 years, musical legends Bill and Gloria Gaither have been celebrating Memorial Day with their 3-day musical festival – Family Fest in the Smokies. Held at the Gatlinburg Convention Center, the event begins on May 27th and continues until May 29th. The musical event is dotted with inspirational guest speakers, various gospel artists and the star guest, the Gaither Vocal Band. Attendees will be surrounded by fellow believers and enjoy a wonderful time laughing with friends.  Tickets to this event sell out quickly, so it is recommended that your purchase them early!

If you’re looking to give back to the community on Memorial Day, The Smoky Mountain Thunder Memorial Day Ride could be just the thing you’re looking for. For the 11th year in a row, Ron and Sandy Giddis are hosting the motorcycle ride whose purpose is to honor the fallen veterans, police, firefighters and other men and women in uniform. On Sunday, May 29th, more than 1500 men and women will gather in Sevierville to begin the ride. The day will begin with a short ceremony and presentation, and then it will depart on the 60 mile ride that ends at Veteran’s Overlook on Clinch Mountain, where the closing ceremony will be held.

But if tickets sell out and you don’t own a motorcycle, Gatlinburg still offers other fun Memorial Day activities. Enjoy the sunshine on a whitewater rafting expedition or spend the day atop a horse as you enjoy the beautiful Smoky Mountains. Play a round of golf or take a walk on the wild side and experience Ziplining.

If the weather doesn’t hold out or you’d prefer the air-conditioned indoors, Gatlinburg offers many family-friendly attractions. Check out the Hollywood Star Cars Museum or play a competitive game of mini-golf at Old Gatlinburg. Experience the underwater world at Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies or have a hearty laugh at Jon Dee’s Hypnotized Comedy Show.
