Through the Eyes of Babes

Fun for the youngest kids in the Smokies

The Smoky Mountains are the perfect vacation destination for all kinds of families, especially those with little ones! Sometimes, traveling with young kids can be a challenge. They are not old enough for this attraction or tall enough for that one. But in Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, you can find all kinds of options for even the youngest visitors to the Smokies.
Below we’ve listed four must-see attractions that will keep your little ones happy and entertained during their trip to the Smoky Mountains. And you know what that means—when you’re little ones are having a great time, you are too! So be sure to make plans to visit at least one of these exciting attractions during your family’s getaway.

  1. Cades Cove
Inside the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, one of the most popular sites to visit is Cades Cove—and for good reason. Cades Cove offers numerous options for entertainment in the Smokies. You can drive the 11-mile loop, visit several historic sites, and see amazing wildlife. But let’s not forget, this is about what’s fun for the little ones, and Cades Cove definitely delivers! Cades Cove Riding Stables has several options your little ones will enjoy. They can take a guided trail ride, or, if they aren’t sure about getting on a horse by themselves, take a guided carriage ride or hayride with you at their side. These rides are a perfect opportunity to see the park and its wildlife in a unique way and to experience the beauty of the park all together. You can also just have a nice picnic with them if they’re too young to ride horses, or you can take an easy walk/hike.
  2. Dollywood’s Splash Country
If you’re planning to stay in Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge in the late spring or summer, be sure to bring your little ones to Dollywood’s Splash Country! Although plenty of big kids will be running around this park as well, your young ones will find their own place to play at two locations in this park. The Cascades and Little Creek Falls are two interactive children’s playground areas especially designed with your youngsters in mind. These areas are completely safe and full of fun with a children’s pool, fun slides, splash pads, and an activity center. Canopied areas that provide shade during the hottest times of the day are also available for reservation. See the park’s website for more details.
  3. Mynatt Park
A favorite picnic destination for visitors to the Smokies, Mynatt Park (one of several city parks in Gatlinburg) is also a great place to bring the youngest guests in your crew. With tennis courts, a basketball court, a playground area, and more, your kids will have plenty of places to romp around at this park. Even more exciting, at Mynatt Park there is a special children’s fishing stream where you can make special memories teaching your little ones to fish for the first time. The stream is also a great place for kids wanting to practice their fishing skills. No matter what you decide to do, Mynatt Park is an ideal family attraction you won’t want to miss during your visit to the Smokies.
  4. Ober Gatlinburg
If you’re looking for a family attraction where you can have hours of endless fun, check out Ober Gatlinburg, Gatlinburg’s premier skiing destination. Even if you’re visiting in the summer, Ober Gatlinburg is worth a visit and has something for the whole family, including your little ones. One place you’ll have to visit is Kiddie Land, where your kids can play on swinging bridges, rope webs, ladders, trains, and more! They’ll also get the chance to ride Ober Express, which runs around Kiddie Land all day. Other exciting things for little ones to do inside Ober Gatlinburg include playing mini golf, visiting the arcade, and trying their best to figure out the Amaze’n Maze. And don’t forget the Wildlife Encounter—with river otters, bears, flying squirrels, turtles, and snakes—for an exciting adventure your kids will never forget!
